BCHL Round Robin Semifinals Resume Friday, Four Former BCHL Players Sign NHL Contracts:


It’s an off-day in the BCHL Round Robin Semifinals following Penticton’s 4-1 win Wednesday against Nanaimo. The Clippers return home tomorrow to face Chilliwack. The Vees are next in action on Sunday, when they visit the Chiefs.

Tie-breaker criteria to determine first place: Points; Points in head-to-head games; Goal differential in head-to-head games; Goal differential in overall round-robin games; Round-robin seed

After first place is declared – if the other two teams are tied in round-robin points – they will play a tie-breaker game hosted by the higher round-robin seed on Monday, April 6th.

Forward Grayson Downing (Westside, 2008-11) has signed a two-year, entry level contract with the Minnesota Wild. The 22-year-old from Abbotsford, BC, had 36 points (21 goals, 15 assists) in 38 games during his senior season at the University of New Hampshire this year. The contract kicks in for the 2015-16 season. Downing has joined the Wild’s AHL affiliate in Iowa on an amateur tryout agreement.

Goaltender Joel Rumpel (Penticton, 2009-11) signed a one-year, entry level contract with the San Jose Sharks. He had a 4-23-4 record along with a 3.49 GAA and a .902 save percentage this season with the University of Wisconsin. The Swift Current, SK native posted a 53-50-11 record with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage over four seasons with the Badgers. He will report to the Sharks’ AHL affiliate in Worcester.

Forward Ryan Bayda (Vernon, 1998-99) has signed with the Strauberg Tigers of the German Elite League for the 2015-16 season. The 34-year-old only played six games in 2014-15, posting ten points (six goals, four assists) with the Augsburger Panthers. Next season is Bayda’s sixth straight in the DEL after playing eight pro seasons in North America from 2002-10.

Defenseman Ben Betker (Westside, 2011-12) signed a three-year entry level contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Betker, who just finished his overage season in the WHL with Everett, was selected by the Oilers in the sixth round, 158th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The Cranbrook, BC native played 64 games this season with the Silvertips, scoring 31 points (six goals, 25 assists).

Forward Austin Carroll (Coquitlam, 2010-11) inked an entry level contract with the Calgary Flames. Carroll, a native of Scottsdale, AZ, played four seasons with Victoria of the WHL and was drafted by the Flames in the seventh round (184th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. This past season, he led the Royals in scoring with 77 points (38 goals, 39 assists) in 69 games.

Defenseman Brandon Manning (Prince George, 2007-08) is back in the NHL after being recalled by the Philadelphia Flyers from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. Manning has 43 points (11 goals, 32 assists) in 58 games with Lehigh Valley, and one assist in four games with the Flyers this season.
